It’s a rather ugly title for such a beautiful piece: “Générique.” Having become one of the vintage classics of Miles Davis, this theme that opens the album fits with all the nocturnal drifts and solitary insomnias. The rest of the album is in the same vein: pieces like states of mind, jagged, between deep melancholy and the excitement of romantic encounters. Of course, this music was composed for the film Ascenseur pour l’échafaud by Louis Malle. The composition process was unusual: Miles and his musicians (American Kenny Clarke and the French Barney Wilen, René Urtreger, and Pierre Michelot) improvised it in front of images from the film, exploring the sensory permeability between image and sound. Listening to this music may make you want to rewatch the film, or simply to cross paths with the sublime Jeanne Moreau on the deserted Champs-Elysées.
