If jazz remains the 'sound of surprise', Luxembourgish pianist Michel Reis is still attached to this outdated definition of music. Although always appealing, Reis's solo improvisations constantly take unexpected directions. He plays the piano 'directly', yet always manages to make it sound delightfully unfamiliar, as if it had only been invented the day before. On his second recording as a leader for CAM JAZZ, Reis dedicates his music to 'For A Better Tomorrow'. There is no clear political agenda in this title, but simply a dedication to the idea that by constantly reinventing itself, jazz is intrinsically progressive and engaged in a human desire for improvement and self-development. Not a flamboyant showman, Reis resembles more of a close-up magician. You can hear everything he does, but you don't always quite know how he does it. The magic of music that keeps moving forward...
