It's the story of a young pianist, composer, and arranger who records a background music album for the American market, titled "I Love Paris". Result: eight million copies sold in a few months! The Columbia label then rolls out the red carpet and gives the Frenchy a free hand. "The record company told me: 'What record do you want to make? It's yours,' Michel Legrand recounted in 2006 in Jazz Magazine. I said I wanted to record with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Bill Evans, and I made 'Legrand Jazz'." And that's how "Legrand Jazz" was recorded in three days, in New York, with the greatest names in jazz. Because besides the three titans mentioned by Michel the aptly named, Phil Woods, Paul Chambers, Donald Byrd, and Ben Webster were also part of it, for a dazzling 33 RPM record of invention where the most beautiful standards, from Django by John Lewis to Nuages by Django Reinhardt, passing through In A Mist by Bix Beiderbecke or The Jitterbug Waltz by Fats Waller, were all reinvented with delight by this incredible array of musicians. Thirty years later, Michel Legrand's path crossed that of Miles Davis again, but that's another story, and above all, learn this one by heart.
