The Swiss composer Richard Flury (1896–1967) completed the last of his five symphonies in 1956, when his unpretentious tonal and melodic style – with elements absorbed from Bruckner, Richard Strauss, Joseph Marx, and other late romantics – was a conscious rebellion against the modernist trends of the time. Flury was also an instinctive painter of nature, and the Swiss landscape that meant so much to him is almost as easily felt in supposedly abstract works like this symphony as in those – often nearly symphonic, like the suite heard here as well – that pay explicit homage to the woods and valleys where he grew up.
