In 1985, György Ligeti composed the first book of his Études for piano, to which two other books would be added over the following sixteen years. In the circles of new music insiders, these works were then poorly received and relatively misunderstood. Yet these piano études must be placed in the context of his admiration for the great piano literature, from Bach to Debussy. They can be considered exercises in polyphonic writing in the broad sense of the term. For Ligeti, writing for piano is polyphonic, but also polyrhythmic, polytemporal, and even polyethnic, since the composer draws inspiration from very different musical cultures, from the Balkans to the far reaches of Asia. Far more than simple technical exercises, these Études for piano reveal a great poetry that transcends them.
