Johann Michael Haydn’s music has inevitably been overshadowed by that of his elder brother Franz Joseph, but his music represents some of the finest characteristics of 18th-century classicism. These four Symphonies span a decade, from the graceful blend of elegance and liveliness in the Symphony in D major, the muted violins in the Adagio affettuoso of the Symphony in E-flat major, the charming siciliana of the Symphony in B-flat major, to the foundational Symphony in F major, which features a violin solo and English horn playing together or alternately. Volume 1 of this series can be heard under the reference Naxos 8.573497.
