Atlas Vending, the fourth studio album by the Toronto band METZ, shows that the trio had no intention of resting on their laurels or stagnating. Their early recordings drew from both the energy of the early 90s hardcore scene and riffs reminiscent of The Heat or AmRep, without ever falling into pale imitation of their predecessors. Difficult to label, the music crafted by guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkins, drummer Hayden Menzies, and bassist Chris Slorach has evolved in a natural and gradual way, continually pushing the boundaries of sonic exploration with possessed drumming, punchy bass lines, and blood-splitting guitar riffs. Each track on Atlas Vending serves as a snapshot of the modern condition that oppresses us, forming an inseparable musical and narrative whole. These ten new songs tackle more mature themes such as kinship, social anxiety, addiction, isolation, media paranoia, and the persistent urge to abandon everything and leave it all behind. While in their previous albums, METZ thrived in a kind of abrasive and brutal intensity, the trio here embarks on a more patient and personal slope. The result is an album with a massive and complex sound, bolstered by the co-production of the eclectic Ben Greenberg (Uniform) and the mixing by Seth Manchester (Daughters, Lingua Ignota, The Body) at Machines with Magnets studio in Rhode Island.
