Funeral Party is the writing of an album as one goes through a hangover. Composed and recorded at home, Metro Verlaine's second album oozes frustration and a visceral need to take action. More radical and English-speaking than its predecessor Cut-Up, Funeral Party maintains post-punk and wild tension for nearly 35 minutes. Between the nihilism of a youth already lost – “Teenage Dreams,” “Frustration,” or “Laisse Tomber la Nuit” – and the desire to settle scores – “Life is a Riot” – Raphaëlle and Axel let rage take over, the guitar riffs are sharp and the words are chanted violently, as if to silence the silence. The night has been long and the black sun burns a little higher in the sky. It's the perfect moment to let go and celebrate life. That's exactly what a Funeral Party is.
