Pour those who were expecting Metallica to deliver a repeat of the earthquake caused by the “Black Album” released 5 years earlier, the shock was hard. Indeed, the four men from San Francisco wanted to break through all barriers and come in hard with “Load”, a rich and varied album. It all starts with a rock’n’roll metal track that crushes everything in its path, Ain’t My Bitch. In the same vein, Hetfield and Co compose 2x4, tectonic and groovy, and King Nothing, an energetic diatribe about fame and vanity. But what will disturb longtime fans the most are the softer tracks like the country ballad with powerful lyrics Mama Said, free of saturation, or the southern rock of Ronnie (Lynyrd Skynyrd style). Whether some like it or not, seven years after its release, “Load” can be considered a successful attempt to open up to an audience other than metal fans.
