Metallica’s first album, Kill'Em All, is a musical apocalypse. The album oscillates between allegory (“The Four Horsemen,” “Jump In The Fire”) and a staging of the band and of metal, as in “Whiplash,” whose intro has all the feel of an entrance onto the stage and which ends with the self-reference “Cause we are Metallica.” This aesthetic work reveals the album’s double theme: protest and the assertion of belonging to a musical (sub)culture.
