How do you top a scorching hit like MESH’s 2013 release “Automation Baby”? At the time, the band not only reached the Top 30, but also delivered a future fan favorite (“What could possibly come after that?”, they exclaimed) with powerful singles, dominating both the clubs and your home stereo. In addition, the duo had written their heaviest and most energetic songs to date. The fitting reward was more successful tours and an ever-growing fan base. MESH had long since moved beyond being just a live band. So they didn’t even try to apply the “Automation Baby” formula to “Looking Skyward” once again. Although the lead single “Kill Your Darlings” recalls “Born To Lie”, the album’s mood and sound are different. After all, Mark Hockings and Rich Silverthorn also changed their approach to production. “Following up ‘Automation Baby’ was difficult because we really saw it as our ‘baby’,” admits singer Mark. “For ‘Looking Skyward’, we were juggling different ideas, using smartphones, laptops or tablets and roaming the streets with tape recorders making samples. The demos were recorded all over the world, we even wrote our own software and took photos in abandoned factories, not to mention a great video.” Aside from that, the focus of “Looking Skyward” is on the music itself. While its predecessor marked the “Sturm und Drang” period of the Bristol natives, this album is more accessible and partly more pop ('Last Man Standing', 'The Fixer'). The analog synthesizers (“My Protector”) and classic ballads (“Before The World Ends”) have a certain retro charm, making the series different while retaining Mesh’s core strengths – a melancholy or nostalgia that is equally synthetic and organic, supported by Mark’s incredibly powerful vocals and Rich’s intense arrangements.
