On this fourth Mercury Rev album, screaming guitars, dadaist noises and all-out delirium give way to wonderful music, full of emotion and warmth. From the very first track, “Holes,” everything is said: a magnificent melody, an incredible voice perpetually on the verge of breaking in the highs, and beautifully crafted arrangements built on layers of strings and flutes. Elsewhere, pianos, Hammond organs, harpsichords or musical saws are all in their element. The psychedelic madness of these men has been channeled, even if you can feel it still there, ready to spring out at every turn of the verse or in those little wobbly instrumental breaks that punctuate the album, before moving on to a tear-inducingly beautiful “Opus 40” or “Goddess On A Hiway,” a nearly “normal” song with a killer chorus. Superb from start to finish.
