A true all-star from Brooklyn, The Menahan Street Band is a collective that spans several years of musical exploration through the experience of its members: Thomas Brenneck (The Budos Band, The Expressions, Los Yesterdays), Dave Guy (The Roots, The Dap-Kings, Late Night House Band), Nick Movshon (Lee Fields and the Expressions, The Black Keys, The Avalanches), Leon Michels (Big Crown Records, El Michels Affair, The Black Keys), and Homer Steinweiss (The Dap-Kings, Holy Hive, Lee Fields and the Expressions). Each brings a unique approach to the compositions. The band bridges the gap between jazz and soul. Their music has served as a foundation for some of the most successful beats in modern hip-hop. Their tracks have been sampled by Eminem, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, 50 Cent, and Curren$y, to name a few. When The Menahan Street Band was formed in 2007, each member already had solid experience. As musicians and founders of various projects at Daptone Records, they discovered a shared love for hip-hop and rock’n’roll, as well as other eccentric sub-genres that pushed them away from soul and funk music. Their goal is to create music with a broader spectrum, encompassing their eclectic influences and tastes, showcasing their versatility. This culminated in the release of their first album, Make the Road by Walking, in 2008. In 2021, the band finally returned with The Exciting Sounds of Menahan Street Band. A third album that reveals new dimensions, in tone and timbre, as well as in sound and visual atmospheres. The universe developed by artist Ariana Papademetropoulis for the artwork perfectly complements the analog musical arsenal used in the album's production.
