For My Mama And Anyone Who Look Like Her - Vinyle Orange
Description
McKinley Dixon, an artist based in Richmond, Virginia, has always used his music as a tool for healing, exploring, and discovering the Black experience to create stories for people who look like him. *For My Mama And Anyone Who Look Like Her*, his debut studio album on Spacebomb, is the culmination of a journey where grief and introspection challenged him to adapt new ways of communicating both physically and mentally, across time and space. Never solely relying on rhythms, Dixon draws throughout the album on hybrid jazz and rap sounds, unveiling an array of incisive strings, soulful brass, percussion, and angelic vocals. It also features contributions from Micah James, Lord JahMonte Ogbon, Pink Siifu, and many others. The jazz instrumentals add a certain level of uncertainty, with sounds and variations that evoke many emotions and vulnerability. It's an energy Dixon describes as predating Kendrick Lamar's *To Pimp A Butterfly*, a time when rap relied more on live instruments. With this album, McKinley Dixon expresses that he was sad and angry, and now he feels truly alive.
