Description

Theodora affirms the emergence of English opera based on biblical episodes. This sublime oratorio by Handel tells the tragic fate of the Princess of Antioch, who became a Christian and resists the authority of Rome. In love with the centurion Didymus, who is also converted to Christianity, she will perish alongside her lover in a mutual consent, both refusing to renounce their faith. This new recording made in 2021 by Il Pomo d'Oro, brilliantly conducted by the conductor and harpsichordist Maxim Emelyanychev, features an exceptional cast: Joyce DiDonato (Irene), Lisette Oropesa (Theodora), Michael Spyres (Septimius), Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian (Didymus), John Chest (Valens). One of the lyrical events of this end of the year! Maxim Emelyanychev's Theodora is entirely operatic drama from the muscular opening followed by a pyrotechnic and robust first act, and starting from the second act, the baton is liberated, and a festival of colors from Il Pomo d'Oro complements the nervous precision of the strings, the very present continuo, and shapes the arias, allowing the characters to flourish, daring the risky spontaneity of dilations and accelerations. It must be said that the stage fully deserves its name of "Great Voices" and that one finds oneself pinned to the back of one's seat under the shockwave of such projections.
