Sonates pour violon

Description

Saint-Saëns’s violin sonatas are not part of the standard repertoire, and yet they fully deserve to be played more often: they radiate that typically French spirit, the charm and brilliance that Saint-Saëns had the secret of. They are effective and stimulating concert pieces. This new recording presents two violin sonatas and two shorter works for violin and piano: Tryptique op. 136, in which the composer serves up magnificent “chinoiseries,” and the beautiful Berceuse op. 38. Excellent playing of a high technical and musical standard by Mauro Tortorelli and Angela Meluso, who had already recorded many titles; their recording of Sivori’s violin works for Naxos was highly praised by the press.
