In June 2022, Maurizio and Daniele Pollini went to the Herkulessaal in Munich to record a new studio album dedicated to three essential aspects of Schubert's piano music: the sonatas, the cycles of short pieces, and the music for four hands. This project was close to the hearts of both father and son, who shared a particular love for the Viennese composer, and for which the two musicians rehearsed and played a four-hand piece together for the first time: the elegant Fantasy in F minor, written in 1828, the year of Schubert's death. For the great Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini, this was to be his last recording. He passed away in March 2024 at the age of 82. Thus, this album from two generations of musicians, both touching and profound, becomes a legacy and a hopeful look towards the future: "With my father's death, the angle from which I viewed the recording and the entire process of its realization inevitably changed," explains Daniele Pollini. "What should have been a very special occasion turned into a unique event, indeed impossible to reproduce. I am therefore very happy to have had the opportunity to record this Schubert album and to participate in my father's last recording."
