L'Anticonformiste Libertaire

Description

35 years after his death, Maurice Fanon remains the archetype of the nonconformist artist who never received the fame his literary talent and sense of melody seemed to promise. Yet he was sung by many performers, from Pia Colombo (his ex-wife) to Isabelle Aubret, including Juliette Gréco, Francesca Solleville, Jean Guidoni, Joe Dassin, Felix Leclerc, and more recently Hervé Vilard. Some of his songs, such as L'écharpe (Prix de l'académie Charles Cros in 1963), La petite Juive, or Paris-Cayenne (Prix du festival de Berlin), are immense “classics” of the Parisian Left Bank cabarets. On stage, he triumphed with Jacques Brel during a memorable musicorama, but he was also present with Georges Brassens or Boby Lapointe. Shamefully boycotted by the media for his “uncompromising” side and fiercely anti-militarist stance, Maurice Fanon, “the anar coco” as he liked to call himself, remains an unforgettable idealistic and bohemian singer.
