Matthias Goerne, one of the great interpreters of Schubert's lieder, achieves a remarkable first with his new album for Deutsche Grammophon: The German baritone presents the lieder of Franz Schubert in entirely new versions for voice and orchestra. The carefully composed selection of nineteen lieder includes well-known pieces such as 'An Silvia', 'Der Tod und das Mädchen' and 'Erlkonig'. These new orchestrations come to life thanks to the musicians of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. The works have been arranged by Alexander Schmalcz, Goerne's long-time partner on stage. The emotional impact of Goerne's interpretations is here enriched by the wide range of colors and instrumental textures that Schmalcz brings to the selection of lieder on the album. "It acquires a sound dimension that the piano cannot represent in this way. That doesn't mean it's better, but different," explains the singer.
