20 years ago, when the director of the Bis label received the proposal for a complete recording of Bach’s cantatas by a Japanese conductor and choir, it is said that he burst out laughing... Since the proposal came with a round-trip ticket to Tokyo, he nevertheless went there to hear the musicians... and he was immediately impressed by the quality of the ensemble. He did not hesitate for a second and launched the first volume of the complete set. 18 years, 55 discs and 200 cantatas later, the Bach/Suzuki complete set will remain one of the most successful of the past 20 years. The press was not mistaken: each volume was praised. The latest is no exception: it is already Grammophon’s Editor’s Choice and BBC’s Record of the Month, which finds that over two decades, the conductor’s perspective has evolved considerably: at first a humble servant of Bach’s works, Suzuki has, over the years, become a familiar presence, an intimate of this music.
