Sony Classical presents an ambitious release with Martin Frost, both clarinetist and conductor. He is joined by soloists Lucas Debargue (Piano), Ann Hallenberg (Mezzo-Soprano) and Elin Rombo (Soprano) as well as the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, in a double album illustrating the paradox of fragile existence and extraordinary creativity of Mozart. “Mozart: Ecstasy and Abyss.” Each of the two albums in the edition focuses on a moment in Mozart's life where the composer seemed to be on the razor's edge between triumph and disaster, joy and depression, life and death. It is these moments that gave birth to the composer's music of extraordinary beauty and intensity. It features the sublime Clarinet Concerto by Mozart, his bubbling Piano Concerto No. 25 (soloist: Lucas Debargue), his joyful symphonies of Prague and Jupiter, and sparkling arias from the operas La clemenza di Tito (with Ann Hallenberg) and Idomeneo (with Elin Rombo). This disc marks Frost's recorded debut as a conductor, as he leads the orchestra in his third recording of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. Frost is convinced that Mozart's ability to "smile through tears" can help us understand the paradoxes of our own lives.
