"Exotica" is just a typo away from "erotica," and it is not at all an exaggeration to place Martin Denny's music in a society that had just experienced the publication of the Kinsey reports, the launch of Playboy magazine four years earlier, and the arrival of Elvis Presley. But Denny's music may be more voluptuous than sensual. When compared to other music released the same year - Miles Davis' Miles Ahead, Sonny Rollins' Way Out West, Charles Mingus' Tijuana Moods, the albums of Gene Vincent, Bill Haley, and Little Richard - it seems less original or radical, which explains why for a time, Denny's music was disdainfully relegated to the category of "easy listening." Time has worked its magic, and today this music is recognized as one of the best in its genre, deeply innovative and influential across the entire spectrum of modern music.
