On the occasion of pianist Martha Argerich’s 80th birthday, Warner Classics is reissuing in HD remastered version the legendary Chopin recital recorded at Abbey Road in 1965 by a 24-year-old Martha Argerich. It was recorded after the International Frédéric Chopin Competition in Warsaw, during which the young Argentine’s exceptional mastery of the instrument and remarkable sensitivity earned her three prizes. The triumph that resulted gave her career a global dimension and forever linked her tumultuous story with that of the competition. Martha Argerich has been described as “undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists of all time.” She recorded this recital in 1965, shortly after her victory at the prestigious Chopin Competition, but it was not made available until 1999. “Argerich was truly the most formidable performer we ever encountered,” said the album’s producer Suvi Raj Grubb, “Nothing could have been superior to this woman. All of this adds up to a recording that is indeed legendary, and now fully remastered in HD 192 kHz / 24 bits from the original tapes.
