Konstanz

Description

On Konstanz, the new album by Marquis, features Frank Darcel on guitar, principal songwriter, and Éric Morinière on drums, both former Marquis de Sade; Niko Boyer on guitar, former member of Detroit, and Belgian singer Simon Mahieu, a revelation. Charismatic, he embodies the voice of Marquis on an album he has co-written this time. Without denying its roots, the band explores new territories, accompanied by notable guests: former Voidoids Ivan Julian, Vernon Reid of Living Color, saxophonist Pierrick Pédron, and Jared Mickael Nickerson, bassist of The The. This distinguished cast infuses the tracks, which move between shadow and light, with a nervous refinement. The shadow is Listen to the Big Bang, the story of a toxic relationship where Denis Bortek (Jad Wio) lends his unique voice, Henry Lee Didn’t Do It and its evocation of a real fake serial killer, or I Wasn’t Born For Real and Pyramid, from which seeps that feeling that sometimes lasts beyond adolescence of never really being in one’s place. The light is In The Mood for Sun, which lets us hear the too-rare voice of Elli Medeiros, in duet with Simon, Immensité de la jeunesse with its haunting chorus, and Jour de Gloire, where the new no future generation looks for reasons to hope in a bleak present. The record ends in the glow of a new dawn, Aux Premier Feux. A suspended and moving ballad, veiled in mist, where absences hover. “Il reste un peu de toi, sous le pont du silence.” Welcome to Konstanz.
