Né en Pologne, Mieczyslaw Weinberg a échappé par deux fois aux invasions nazies avant de s’établir à Moscou, où il devint pendant plus de trente ans le plus proche ami musical de Schostakovich. Compositeur de 26 symphonies, 17 quatuors à cordes et sept opéras, il était aussi un maître de la sonate pour cordes solo, genre auquel Shostakovich n’avait jamais touché et peu cultivé en Union Soviétique. Ses quatre sonates pour violoncelle seul furent composées entre 1960 et 1985, et contiennent quelques-unes de ses inspirations les plus intenses et poétiques.
Eclectic and innovative cellist, Mario Brunello has a vast repertoire that spans from baroque to contemporary music.
