Obsession

Description

"Obsession" is the fascinating theme of the new album by violinist Marie Nadeau-Tremblay. She is accompanied by Mélisande Corriveau (viola da gamba), Eric Milnes (harpsichord and organ), and Kerry Bursey (tenor and lute). The works on this album exhibit obsessive characteristics: a theme and its variations ("La Furstemberg" by Louis-Robert Guillemain, La Folia, Une jeune fillette), a repeated continuo bass line (the pieces by Dietrich Buxtehude and Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber), or an enchanting rondo theme that returns obsessively (François Francœur). Reflecting on the dark character of most of the selected pieces, Marie Nadeau-Tremblay states: "There is something in the homogeneity of an album made up entirely of minor compositions that captivates me, especially since the album speaks of obsession, of being trapped in looping repetitions. I wanted the overall effect of the works to evoke a trance." Named Radio-Canada Classical Revelation 2021-2022 and winner of the Opus Award for Discovery of the Year in 2022, Marie Nadeau-Tremblay is also a recipient of the Choquette Symcox Award from Jeunesses Musicales Canada.
