Accomplished performers in a close duo, Maria and Nathalia Milstein continue this shared musical journey with a remarkable tribute to Schubert’s music for violin and piano. Rare and little-recorded musical moments, these pieces take on a new color in the sound of period instruments that the duo carefully prepared, with a historically informed version that is as personal as it is moving. The Milstein sisters offer us a new Schubert! Meted out sparingly over the course of Franz Schubert’s very short life, the few opus that make up the composer’s work for violin and piano fascinate and intrigue, writing the episodes of a fragmentary story, yet one deeply unified in a mysterious nostalgia. However, for this complete recording we decided to take the risk of seeking out a sound world that would best match what we imagine Schubert’s music to be, this search leading us to try 19th-century pianos. We thus came across a wonderful 1857 Blüthner. The condition of this 2.20-meter instrument is exceptional — the soundboard having never been replaced, one can say that the sound is as it was more than 150 years ago. A favorite that allowed us to create a particular approach to Schubert’s sonority, and which, we hope, will take the listener on a journey in turn.
