Exceptional reissue meticulously restored in 24-bit/96Hz, produced by Abbey Road studios from the original tapes. In the late 1940s, Maria Callas sang the role of Turandot on stage 24 times. It was indeed in this same role that she was to make her American debut. However, the opera company that had hired her went bankrupt, and the performances scheduled in Chicago in 1947 never took place. To Puccini's icy princess, La Callas imparts a haunting subtlety; for Liu, a figure shaped by selflessness, the choice of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, better known for her Fiordiligi (Mozart, Cosi fan Tutte) or her Marschallin (Strauss, Der Rosenkavalier), remains surprising.
