For more than thirty years, Marcel Dettmann, Berlin DJ, producer and programmer, has been a key figure in electronic music, constantly pushing the boundaries of his art. Deeply influenced by genres as varied as post-punk, industrial and synth-pop, his dynamic DJ sets and prolific discography, including landmark releases on Ostgut Ton and Dekmantel, brilliantly fuse raw techno, Chicago house, electro and avant-garde soundscapes. Far beyond clubs and productions on his own labels, MDR and Bad Manners, Dettmann’s multidisciplinary approach has led him into artistic territories ranging from exhibition soundscapes to ballet compositions and film scores. This insatiable creative curiosity defines a career built at the crossroads of dancefloor performance, collaborative experimentation and perpetual sonic evolution. Last year, Dettmann launched My Own Shadow, a project where music, visual art and photography converge through two EPs, Approaching (2025) and Faultline (2026), ahead of the release of the full album. About the project, Marcel explains: “My Own Shadow was not born from a preconceived concept. I simply liked the idea of working under another name and I went for it. My different activities – music, photography, visual arts – gradually began to come together. It came quite naturally. My Own Shadow is me, seen from another angle.” Neither an alter ego nor a break, My Own Shadow: Album is an intimate reflection of the artist; an ephemeral, shifting form that plays with light and subtly reshapes its contours to reveal new depths. The album “My Own Shadow” is built on textured minimalism, playing on rhythm, tension and release, and takes us on a journey through memories and the experience of the dancefloor. This space remains the ultimate field of experimentation where history, instinct and transcendence meet, guiding Dettmann in his musical explorations. “My Own Shadow” is driven by rhythm, texture, space and tension.
