For the first time on record, an unreleased recording of Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy in quartet captured live in concert in Antwerp in 1995! This is the live concert recorded in Antwerp in 1995, released in collaboration with Zev Feldman. All performances are previously unreleased and have been transferred from the original tapes preserved by Patrick Wilen, the son of legendary saxophonist Barney Wilen. Lacy and Waldron first shared the stage at the Five Spot in 1958, and have performed together ever since, often in Europe, where both men settled in the 1960s. The meeting was not a given. Lacy's soprano saxophone had a chirping sound, often evoking lightness, an irrepressible cheerfulness. Waldron's sound had a melancholic vein as deep and rich as a "Blackspiritual" or a Schubert lieder. But the two men shared an affinity with the music of Thelonious Monk and maintained a similar relationship with the avant-garde without ever turning their backs on melody. A sublime alchemy that was revealed that evening in Antwerp, the last of a series of three concerts given in honor of Waldron's 70th birthday.
