Nothing is more ephemeral than oral tradition music, the music masters of the mid-19th century conceived the project to preserve for posterity what they had saved from an ancient heritage. Gathering melodic materials from all corners of Iran, they developed a model repertoire, the radif, whose methodical study was to lead to the very source of art and musical inspiration. The creation of duradif aimed to preserve not only the melodies but also the modal structures which, over time, would become hermetic and eventually disappear if reference models were not available.
