The fifteen inventions in two parts and the fifteen sinfonias in three parts are constructed according to a tonal scheme very likely intended for the young students of J.S. Bach, sparing them the double sharps and mind-boggling modulations of the Well-Tempered Clavier. The idea of the collection was probably to invite rather than discourage the young keyboardist "eager to learn," as Bach himself wrote in the introduction of the 1723 autograph prepared in Köthen.
