Magic Malik playing standards is certainly surprising. But after just a few measures, the quintet led by the flutist delivers such a personal interpretation of these well-known themes that it feels as though this music has been accompanying these five musicians for a long time... Everything Malik has played before (Fanfare XP, legacies of Steve Coleman and M-Base, the Guadeloupeans, etc.) finds in these standards, a sublime and open foundation of Great Black Music, more than just an echo: a new listening experience.
