This album reeks of sulfur from the cover. We see the stern face of the star photographed in a "Yankee Che Guevara" style against a seriously damaged stars and stripes background. Madonna is back, and we haven't seen her this provocative and ready to shake things up in a long time. However, musically, the fans of the madonna will easily find their way. Despite some ironic diatribes on the American dream (Hollywood, the title American Life) "American Life" is in the same musical line as its predecessor, with some differences, however. Even if we undeniably recognize the touch of the pro of pro-tools, the French Mirwais, who co-produced the album, the guitars are more present than on "Music" (Nothing Fails, Intervention, Static Process).
A skillful blend of acoustic sounds and effects of all kinds on pop melodies sung by the voice of Che Madonna, some tracks stand out like the spacey Nobody Knows Me, the very folk Nothing Fails, and the touching "acousticoid" litany of Easy Ride with striking string arrangements. If Madonna is committed in 2003, it is indeed in the path of success... provoking.
