Twenty years after the release of her first album, Madeleine Peyroux continues her fascinating musical journey with a new masterpiece bringing together songs of wild energy and sensuality in which funk, blues, and jazz intertwine. Accompanied by the two musicians who have been touring with her for two years, guitarist Jon Herington and double bassist Barak Mori, the artist chose to record this selection of songs live, all of which address spirituality in their own way. Madeleine Peyroux covers the blues legends Willie Dixon and Lil Green, the famous gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, dub star Linton Kwesi Johnson, Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, Allen Toussaint, Stephen Foster (a 19th-century composer considered the first great American songwriter), and closes the album with a beautiful interpretation of an African American traditional song. The recording took place during a concert held in an old church in the English countryside near Oxford.
