A fleeting phenomenon since they only have one album to their name, they formed an ensemble of nine musicians and singers. The group found success with the hit "Paris a le Blues" on the eponymous album, which transcended the hip-hop microcosm as more mainstream radio stations, at a time when rap was booming, latched onto the Mad In Paris trend. They spent fifteen weeks in the top 50 of the era. The song describes the malaise, the blues that clings to the City of Light, "from Barbès to Abbesses, from the Champs-Elysées to Les Halles," pouring out spleen. Thirty years later, this sound remains one of the most famous jaunts through Paname in French music. Several of us in the editorial team confessed that we wore out this track back then, and although today the sound has certainly aged a bit, because this rap no longer matches our current standards or we would certainly no longer listen to "Paris A le Blues," Mad In Paris shaped all of us a little. More fleeting, but in the same way as Alliance Ethnik, we moved to these sounds that many called "groove" rather than hip-hop, a blend of often mixed urban music ranging from rap to funk. If the term "groove" is a catch-all term used by the media to encompass all these influences, Mad In Paris certainly has its place in "rap." Because it was 1996 and we loved it.
