Yuyay Jap'ina Tapes brings together recordings by the Bolivian singer Luzmila Carpio commissioned by Unicef as part of a program to preserve Andean cultures and distributed on audio cassettes to Quechua-speaking populations between 1991 and 1995. On it, Luzmila Carpio explores, with her unique falsetto voice (the “nightingale of the Andes”), her charango and her musicians, her favorite themes: Pachamama (Mother Earth), respect for indigenous consciousness, women’s rights, as well as education, access to drinking water, and the language of birds. France holds an important place in Luzmila Carpio’s international career, with two concert series in the 1980s and 2000s and two albums (Accords Croisés / Harmonia Mundi) praised by critics. She also had a political career, and is a true icon in Bolivia, where she became ambassador to France from 2006 to 2011, appointed by President Evo Morales. A historical document from a living legend of South American culture, Yuyay Jap'ina Tapes is a unique testimony of cultural resistance and a masterpiece of folk music, strikingly original, already classic and still avant-garde; it is a repertoire that Luzmila Carpio still performs on stage today. The 17 tracks on Yuyay Jap'ina Tapes have been restored and remastered from the original tapes; they are available for the first time on CD, accompanied by a documented 24-page booklet containing unpublished original photos from the artist’s personal archives.
