Corelli: Sonates Op. 5

Discovering a talented flutist, Luis Beduschi, on Corelli’s Opus 5. It is unlikely that Corelli could have anticipated the impact his Opus 5 would have throughout the 18th century and even long after. Indeed, the Corellian Solos, as they were called at the time, were reprinted more than fifty times up to the 1800s, not counting the hundreds of manuscript copies and the few dozen arrangements, proof if ever one were needed that Op. 5 was played and used as a teaching tool throughout the 18th century. No other collection of pieces has been the subject of so many testimonies of free ornamentation, which makes Corelli’s Op. 5 sonatas a privileged object for the study of free ornamentation in the 18th century. Luis Beduschi, an internationally recognized flutist, chose Corelli’s ornaments to make these works his own on the flute because of their undeniable beauty and the coherence of the set. Originally for violin, Luis Beduschi decided to set aside unsatisfactory Baroque transcriptions in order to create his own transcription, with the aim of preserving the original line as much as possible.
