Here is a record that, in many ways, breaks new ground with the combination of harp and cello, which brings to life some rare composers, themselves harpists or closely associated with the harp: Tournier, Hasselmans, Oberthür, Spohr. This provides the opportunity to discover some rarely heard transcriptions or adaptations. It must be acknowledged that the blend of the two instruments' sounds is particularly successful here due to the talent of the two performers, and is beautifully highlighted by the choice of these pieces that form a captivating bouquet full of sensitivity. Kreisler (Liebesleid), Fauré (Sicilienne, Après un rêve), Rossini, Ravel (Pavane pour une infante défunte), and Saint-Saëns (Le Cygne) have the chance to enchant, but even more so, Nikolaus Kraft (Divertimento), Spohr (Magic Flute Variations), Tournier (Nocturne), Hasselmans (Confidence), and Oberthür (Old Robin Gray) often move us with the ingeniously naive quality of their forgotten melodies or subtly adapted works. The harp constantly provides the singing cello with the shimmering hues of its silky sounds, reminiscent of what one imagines from Spohr's duos with his wife, Dorette Scheidler. A very successful production from a label that never fails to shed light on lesser-known aspects of music history.
