Ida Haendel, born in Poland in 1924 (some claim it was in 1928), may have had the most modest career among the greatest virtuosos of the 20th century, despite the high regard of audiences and the public. When she was only three years old, she began playing the violin on her sister's instrument, took lessons at the Warsaw Academy of Music at the age of seven, won the Wieniawski Competition at seventeen, and started her solo career two years later. In 1935, the family moved to Paris, where Ida Haendel honed her skills through studies with Carl Flesch and George Enescu. Due to the war, her debut in the United States did not take place until 1946, but in the following years, most of her concerts were held in Europe and Israel. She eventually settled in London, where her performance of "Tartiniana seconda" by Luigi Dallapiccola became an exceptional concert event. In 1991, she became a member of the Order of the British Empire.
