Jaleo, A Space of Freedom.
Designed in the early 2000s, this ambitious project was meant to allow Louis Winsberg, leader of Sixun, a leading group in French experimental jazz, to establish connections between jazz, flamenco, and modal music. More specifically, it was about performing what the guitarist calls a "graft." It was for him a response to an urgent need, that of rediscovering the sounds that, as a child, and long before he discovered jazz, he heard during his travels in Aragon and Andalusia or in the South of France, when his parents were connected to the gypsy family of Reyes (the very same family that would found the successful rumba catalana group, the Gypsy Kings)
For Paco is also the third album of "Jaleo," which implies a confluence of sounds exceeding Andalusia.
Winsberg plays the guitar, oud, mandolin, saz, bouzouki, all instruments from various regions (Maghreb, Turkey, Italy), which the guitarist always approaches with the same appetite for the marvelous. This adventure has always been conceived as a collective endeavor. Although he is the last original member of the group, Louis intends for it to remain a matter of sharing and multiplicities, of musical horizons always pushed further.
While some long-time collaborators have come to support him for this new album, such as percussionists Miguel Sanchez and Nantha Kumar, new connections have been forged, notably with cantaor El Piculabé and Jorge Pardo, a member of the legendary sextet of Paco de Lucía in the 80s and 90s, who agreed to play on two tracks.
