In the second half of the fifties, Louis Armstrong's discography resembles a bit the series of Martine: Louis under the stars, Louis and the Angels, Louis and the Bible. The Bible is this Good Book of which he made an album, and a good one. On the cover, his trumpet is above an open Bible, as if it were coming out of it or even more, reading it. From the text, the spirituals emerge, the foundational religious songs of African American culture, which Louis Armstrong sings with his usual rocky good humor. For this album, Armstrong reunites with arranger Sy Oliver, who had smoothly orchestrated the versions of "C’est si bon" and "La Vie en rose" a few years earlier. In the same musical vein and accompanied by about ten choristers, Armstrong addresses the angels and caresses them in the direction of the feathers throughout The Good Book.
