Coleman Leslie McCann, known as Les McCann, is arguably the most soulful jazz pianist of the sixties. To be convinced of this, one only needs to drop everything and go listen to him, with Eddie Harris, live in Montreux, on June 21, 1969, playing "Compared to What." This recording is a monument in the history of soul jazz. But before this concert, Les McCann's trio, with Herbie Lewis and Ron Jefferson, had introduced a new style characterized by the joy and pleasure of playing, grooving, and listening. It was impossible at a Les McCann concert not to share in his joy, his desire to share, impossible not to tap your feet. The recordings from 1960 to 1962 on this album are a turning point that contributed to jazz's shift into a new world. If today, the jazz world incorporates all soul music, it is because a few musicians like Les McCann naturally, in the early sixties, abolished boundaries and classifications.
