Liraz and her Israeli sextet (three women, three men) recorded Roya in ten days. With her Hebrew accent intact, her confidence boosted by prestigious awards (she was Songlines Artist of the Year 2021) and wide international recognition, Liraz has never seemed so passionate, strong, and rebellious. Roya is thus the next stage in a highly publicized career distinguished by its desire to fight against oppression and defend the right of women worldwide to sing, perform, and be heard. From album to album, Liraz has become bolder, more outspoken (ask her about Palestine and she will also champion the rights of Palestinians). Serpentine strings through electronic pulsations and wah-wah guitars, "Azizam" is a psychedelic marvel; a slow and solitary song about Iran, "Tanha," composed of strings and synthesizers, was recorded the day the Iranians arrived in Istanbul. While "Joonyani" speaks of mad love, the cinematic "Bi Hava" - rich in strings and tranquil - seems to complete the circle of friendship between Liraz, her band, and the musicians from Tehran. A collection of 11 tracks that enrich this characteristic blend of traditional and modern rhythms and Persian sounds, Roya conceives music as a magical portal, an ark to a place of peace, joy, and unbridled freedom, without a chador.
