Today’s Special, by Hanne Lippard and Renato Grieco, is a suite of linguistic works that combine melody and diction, integrating the literary and the audible into a repertoire of songs steeped in the melody of the voice and the punctuations of a structured composition. Favoring methods of reduction over opulence, both in tonal composition and rhetoric, each piece connects the poetic to the musical through patterns and methods of composition. It is important to note that there is little to no improvisation here; on the contrary, the duo has established matrices, rules, and structural links that have facilitated a meaningful exchange between their two practices.
