Level 42 – bassist and singer Mark King, keyboardist/singer Mike Lindup, guitarist Boon Gould, drummer/lyricist Phil Gould, and the young studio prodigy Wally Badarou – were, in 1983, highly respected survivors of the early 80s Britfunk explosion, but had not yet truly broken through. A must-see live act, they had not yet experienced any real commercial success. Polydor sensed this and sent the band to Los Angeles to work with Larry Dunn and Verdine White of Earth, Wind & Fire, in order to add an extra dimension to their sound.
