Alongside Emmanuel Pahud are the clarinetist Paul Meyer (who is increasingly dedicating himself to conducting), the oboist François Leleux (currently a professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich), the bassoonist Gilbert Audin (solo bassoonist at the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Paris), and the Croatian horn player Radovan Vlatkovic (currently a professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg). All these leading soloists perfectly engage in chamber music here, with beautiful instrumental perfection. The 1st CD is dedicated to French music for wind instruments, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th. Jacques Ibert, Maurice Ravel, André Jolivet, Darius Milhaud, and Paul Taffanel all distinguished themselves in this field. With the exception of Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin, skillfully transcribed for wind quintet by the American Mason Jones, these are original scores. Next to the touching simplicity of Jacques Ibert's Trois Pièces brèves, let us admire André Jolivet's Sonatine for oboe and bassoon and especially the beautiful Suite from La cheminée du Roi René by Darius Milhaud, rich in the polytonality that characterizes the composer's creative style. Paul Taffanel's Wind Quintet is worth discovering for its refined harmonic style. The 2nd CD of the album opens its repertoire to a beautiful selection of European composers from the 20th century. The 6 Bagatelles for wind quintet by György Ligeti, transcribed by the composer himself from his famous Musica ricercata for piano, may constitute the central piece of this collection. Spirit, imagination, and vitality are magnificently highlighted by the performers. Alexander von Zemlinsky's Humoreske (a professor and brother-in-law of Arnold Schönberg, whose new composition theories he did not adopt) is also a score to discover. The poetic Summer Music by Samuel Barber, the Sonatina for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon by Sándor Veress, a student of Bartók and Kodály, as well as Paul Hindemith's Kleine Kammermusik harmoniously complete this rich panorama that truly deserved such a tribute.
