Also an acclaimed conductor, Kavakos is a complete musician who enjoys cultivating a virtuosic repertoire as he demonstrates with BACH: SEI SOLO, a double album dedicated to the famous sonatas and partitas for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach. Recorded in Berlin in December 2020, it is one of the most masterful works in the violin repertoire. Indeed, no composer in history has matched Bach's ability to create an architectural wonder using a single instrument. Bach titled his set Sei Solo - both a description of the work itself ("six solos") and a reminder of the challenge posed to the musician: "you are alone." The set includes the famous Chaconne in D minor which, for many, is Bach's greatest piece. On this record, Kavakos plays on his Stradivarius ‘Willemotte’ from 1734. The album's release coincides with a series of concerts by Kavakos dedicated to Bach, which will take place in unique and historic venues, as the violinist explores the connection between the composer's music and our collective sense of humanity. After performing at the ancient theater of Epidaurus in Greece, the violinist wishes to take Bach's music to places of great symbolic and spiritual importance, such as the Sistine Chapel, the Dome of the Rock, the Great Wall of China, and the city of Hiroshima. "Through the complex exchange created between the performer, the music, the space, and the audience attending the performance, we create a kind of unique human temple within which the best and worst of humanity can be evoked and contemplated," explains Leonidas Kavakos.
