Description

Solomon is now considered by interpreters and music lovers as one of the highlights of Handel's catalog. However, it was not always this way. Rarely in the British career of the composer did any performance of Solomon take place during his lifetime outside of London. A more than lukewarm success, then. But what were the reasons, when the formula of oratorios sung in English was meeting with great success? The obvious lack of theatricality in the libretto? A hint of audience fatigue? Was it the fear of no longer being surprised? Or the fear of alienating representatives of the Church, given the rumors of barely veiled erotic lines in the first and third acts? With his singers and instrumentalists, Leonardo García Alarcón offers us a flamboyant version here that would certainly have won over the most hesitant London listeners of 1749!
