It’s delicious, sweet to perfection, and very frothy, ladies, as light as a good Viennese chocolate! If you were to add a touch of irony against a backdrop of female emancipation and a French pamphlet, you wouldn’t have rediscovered the lost recipe of an operetta Escoffier, but rather the operetta by the prolific Austro-Hungarian composer Leo Fall (1873-1925), Die Rose von Stambul, created in 1916. Just like German cinema from the 20s or 50s, the late Fritz Wunderlich made quite a splash with it… Here, the Munich radio orchestra, under the precise baton of Ulf Schirmer, presents this Orientalist gem in a Breton style with all Bavarian finesse. Everything sounds light and precise in this 2014 live recording; the orchestra plays without ostentation a repertoire that is firmly established, the choir and soloists do not mince words, the spoken voices are even accurate, warm, and never exuberant. This rose is a pearl of dew and reminds us that the often-neglected operetta is a genre that has its rightful place in the realm of classical music. Bravo! (Florestan de Marucaverde)
